Digital Death Research with Copenhagen Business School and the University of the Faroe Islands

Qualitative digital legacy and digital death research

The Digital Legacy Association are aiding research being undertaken by Copenhagen Business School and the University of the Faroe Islands. This is an important study and we are honoured to be involved.

Research overview

“It is now possible to remain online after death with text messages and phone calls to relatives. But how does this  our digital legacy affect us?

How does th emerging ‘digital afterlife’ industry handle the ethical dilemmas? This research project will attempt to shed light on this.

“We want to try to understand how people use these services. And what is a digital afterlife? How do people perceive it? Until recently, when people used the word afterlife, they thought more about the spiritual or religious afterlife. So does it have an impact on that? Or is it perhaps a complement to that?” says Marina Leban.

The research will be based on data collected from the internet, including discussions on the topic. In addition, the researchers will interview providers within the digital afterlife industry and users of the industry’s services.”

Our support

The Digital Legacy Association are assisting with the research into specific fields of digital death and digital legacy. The research outcomes will be symbiotic. It will assist the project in their understanding of this field. In turn, the qualitative research will build upon our own and societies understanding of this increasingly important area. The research will also provide further context and insights (from the the largely quantitive data source provided within our flagship Digital Death Survey.
